Why Go Abroad With HWS?

Geneva, NY -As many prospective students come to tour HWS, they are often told about the amazing study abroad programs we offer through the Center for Global Education. The school encourages students to leave campus and study elsewhere with a curriculum built for these adventures.

The CGE offers full-semester programs as well as programs that last only a few weeks in a wide variety of countries allowing students to continue their academic endeavors while also making invaluable memories and connections across the world. Some of the countries that students study in include Italy, Ireland, England, Japan, and Brazil, although there are many more options.

The application deadline for the Spring of 2024 semester programs was Tuesday, February 28th here at the colleges.

Sydney Herbruck, a sophomore at HWS, decided to apply for the Spring 2024 semester and said, “I wanted to receive an education for my major while immersed in a foreign culture.” Herbruck thought that the application process was straightforward and that the CGE was an available and helpful resource.

Herbruck stated that the study abroad opportunities at the colleges were a very important factor in her deciding to attend HWS and that she hopes the experience makes her a more well-rounded person with more cultural experiences.

Frances Wilson, a junior at the colleges, went abroad last fall to Italy. She said it was something she never thought about doing because she was a student-athlete, but couldn’t let this once-of-a-lifetime opportunity pass. While abroad, she had expectations that she was going to be changed as a person and although she does agree with this, she also said how challenging the adjustments of being immersed in an unfamiliar place were.

Wilson said that although it was hard to adjust and she felt lost at times, “I am very glad I went as it allowed me to experience a whole new culture and I got to meet new people who I am still friends with today!" She also said that now that she has studied abroad, her experience at HWS feels more fulfilling.

Gretchen Warner is a junior who is abroad in Rome, Italy this semester and says that she would 100% recommend going abroad to other students. She did say that it took time to adjust like Frances.

“Being able to live in a different country and not just visit as a tourist has been an incredible experience” stated Warner.

HWS has a CGE program that encourages studying off campus and is there to help you throughout the process. Although it takes time to adjust to a new place, it seems that studying abroad enhances students’ college experiences and broadens their cultural understanding.
